A decade of fundraising.
By Jerry C. Ray
For ten years, we at Mary’s Peak Hound Club and Oregon United Sporting Dog Association have held fundraisers for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and cystic fibrosis. This year, as before, we want to thank the many houndsmen and others who generously supported each of our non-shooting events.
The Saturday rabbit hunt competition, using United Kennel Club (UKC) rules and scoring, and with champion points at stake, included seventeen registered beagles. The registered class winner was Vicky, owned by Willard Wilcox of Lebanon, Oregon and Levi owned by George Cox of Corvallis, Oregon was the winner of the champion class. With three dogs in the UKC bench show which followed, judge Lorelei Fister declared Anna, owned by Missy Fix of Philomath, Oregon, best show dog of the day.
Again using UKC rules and scoring, the grade dog coonhound night hunt competition included thirteen dogs and about twenty-six houndsmen, judges, and spectators. After two hours of pursuing the night bandit, Idaho Little Red Buddy won, a dog owned by Joseph Melson of Dundee, Oregon.
We want to stress that those without a competition dog can still participate in our yearly fundraiser by sponsoring a single dog or cast. This year Mr. and Mrs. Joe DiOrio of Scio, Oregon won as single dog sponsor, and Oregon Hunter Association, Yamhill County Chapter in Carlton, Oregon won as cast sponsor.
Unique to this year’s event was the donation of a Treeing Walker puppy by Kenney Wilson. The puppy was raffled and all proceeds were contributed to this year’s total donation. Winner of the puppy was Chris Baker of Salem, Oregon.Because of the generous donations of all those who participated, we are pleased this year to present to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital a check for $1790.00. We want to thank everyone who took part in such a fun and successful effort.
